Sutton’s Community Awards 2020 winners announced

Each year the awards recognised the amazing individuals and groups who go above and beyond to make Sutton a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Close to 300 nominations were submitted across eight categories when nominations opened late last year. This was the second Sutton Community Awards to be held in partnership between Sutton Council, Sutton Housing Partnership, Community Action Sutton and Volunteer Centre Sutton.

Due to COVID-19 and the resulting Government restrictions, the awards were held online for the first time. Nominees submitted videos of themselves talking about their work and what it meant to be recognised by the community.

More than 1,000 people have watched the Sutton’s Community Awards, which was streamed live on Wednesday 3 February.

The winners were:

  • Outstanding Community Champion - Robert Watson

"Congratulations to all the winners from this year's Sutton Community Awards. Whether you have won an award, were shortlisted or were nominated, everyone should have a huge sense of pride for the contribution you make to our local community. To see so many different kinds of volunteering recognised by these awards, both by individuals and by groups, and both formally and informally, is truly inspirational."

Simon Breeze, Chief Executive of Community Action Sutton, said:

“The recent Community Awards was a great chance to step back and remember how many great people there are in Sutton working to make their community better. We all know it has been a difficult year, so it was wonderful to see all the new and old groups be recognised and rewarded and inspiring to hear them speak. Thank you to all of the winners and the nominees, please keep doing what you do!”

Councillor Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council, said:

“Watching the ceremony gave me an immense sense of pride in Sutton's community. Every nomination was inspirational and in a year of unprecedented challenges, the people of our borough really stepped up to support one another.
